AC Slater

When i first found out about this guy, i hoped it was that Latino mullet wearing jockstrap of a human from Saved By The Bell who had somehow become actually relatively cool but turns out its actually a regular bloke hailing from Philadelphia but now residing in New York City. He was one of the biggest American hardcore and freeform DJs and in 2001 started the Pitched Up record label as an outlet for American hardcore music. In 2007 AC Slater moved away from hardcore and raves to focus on a more club oriented sound, getting commissioned to do remixes for artists such as Freestylers, Moby, Shwayze, Human Resource, and Drop the Lime. When asked as to why he started DJ'in he says "When I was really young, I went on vacation, and I had saved up all this money for the vacation with my family. And I met this kid, a friend of my cousin's, who was a DJ, and I was completely mesmerized so I took all the money I had and went to the pawn shop and bought a DJ mixer. When I came home, I started making hip hop mixes for all the kids in my neighborhood and it just kind of took off from there". Its not surprising then that alongside "old school rave stuff", early 90's hip hop has influenced his music a lot. In fact, AC considers De La Soul's album De La Soul is Dead his most influential album "because it's so humorous and fun, and well put together and so lighthearted, but at the same time it's really good, just bad ass".

Jokers Of The Scene

After five years running their wildly successful club night Disorganised, longtime selectors DJ Booth and Chameleonic decided to dive headfirst into producing tracks of their own, and Jokers Of The Scene was born. JOTS take the best and most mind-meltingly intense parts of dance music through history - the ecstatic build-ups of big room euro-house, the hyper-distorted basslines of electro rock, and the lighthearted samples of 1990s rave - and throw them all in a blender at 130 BPM. Well thats the gay spiel out of the way, this is good music, take a listen. It's loud, it's fun, and it's lighting up dancefloors worldwide. The duo are generally regarded as some of the new club producers to watch for 2008.

Here's some tunes from Hot Pink Delorean! These guys are fairly new on the electro scene, but are following in the footsteps of some of their DRUM N' BASS peers and jumping ship for a bit (see also: TREASURE FINGERS & LA RIOTS etc...), as in they've been well know Drum n Bass DJs for a while and now are over to the fidget scene.

The Toxic Avenger

Born Simon DeLacroix, the man behind the comic book and B-movie-inspired persona, The Toxic Avenger is notorious for his infectiously catchy, self-produced dance-a-thon tunes, but is equally recognized for his perfected remixes.

Signed to IHEARTCOMIX Records, in 2007, The Toxic Avenger was named by Rolling Stone as “One of the 5 most influential electronic artists of the year” alongside Justice, LCD Soundsystem, Digitalism and Simian Mobile Disco. The same year, he was a finalist in Diesel’s U:Music Awards.

Still, music is nothing new to The Toxic Avenger. At the tender age of 12, the tiny Avenger played for various punk bands, as guitarist and vocalist, and a number of short-lived hardcore metal bands, including Comity, who continues to play to this day. Dropping the punk-hardcore genre, he fell into the electro movement after falling in love with a girl who worked at an electro radio station. Soon after catching the electro bug, he began creating songs on his low-budget computer, quickly mastering his unique sound.

Bobmo

Look at him, not the standard looking DJ is he? But Bobmo a young producer hailing from the hyperactive city of Paris via the even more hyper city of Bordeaux. While in high school, with no musical training, he launched a short-lived rap career, making beats on his Playstation (no seriously), spitting awkward tales of murder and woe. Bobmo got into Detroit techno, Miami bass, electro and, most importantly, Chicago house. He got himself a PC and downloaded everything from legendary labels Dancemania and Trax. Like so many kids (he's 19, by the way) of the P2P generation, he ended up taking matters into his own hands.

Surkin - Kid Gloves (Bobmo Mix) VERY GOOD!

Malente & Dex - Hyperactive (Bobmo Remix)

DJ Barletta

A pretty strong favourite of mine at the minute, every new remix this electro maverick makes is getting better and better. Dj Barletta has been wiping out tunes and remixes by the dozen, gaining great attention from artists such as MSTRKRFT, Crookers, Don Rimini, and many more. He recently partnered up with fellow Toronto native Van Helder for the group Mansion. Mansion has also been blowing up and been gaining notoriety in Toronto and in the blog world.

Hostage

Taken from a recent interview:

For those that dont know your music - how would you describe your sound?

If it was a recipe for a nice dancefloor-cake you'd do the following:
Ingredients:
500g of Electro and mixed with 250g of House music
125g of Techno
A dash of Old-Skool Hardcore
A tablespoon of Fidget (If you don't have any fidget a wee bit of Wonk will do)
A knob of Bassline
Blend them all together into a nice wobbly dough.
Bake at Gasmark 128bpm for 1 hour and 20 Minutes.
Sprinkle with UK Rave Stabs circa 1992

Whats your favourite track so far this year?

Bird Peterson - The Essence

What do you think to Crookers potentially going 'mainstream'? Will this affect your production style at all?

It wont affect my production style at all but It's kinda nice that the sounds which I like are being accepted in a mainstream way.

I heard the Crookers remix of Kid Cudi's Day and Night on TMF at 9:15am on Monday morning this week - which made me think - AWWGAWWWD, but then I thought, no, wait, that's damn cool, I bloody love that bassline, Ok, i've heard it in every set in every club all year, but damn, that's good that it's so popular.

Who should we look out for in 09'?

Volatile.
