I will NEVER tire of this duo. This is a filthy electro song (filthy not so much due to the music...I love double entendres). I can often get put off but overly stupid lyrics just to make people laugh, it can often just be tacky. But here, the track is so perfect and warrants its own merit that no matter how obsessed the singer is with "cookies", you've gotta love the growling synths and big room drops. Sick Tune!

Is it still a treat if it's the fourth one? Course it bloody well is if you listen to the tracks on offer. Got back from Snowbombing in Austria last week and it was absolutely mental! I was in that mess of a crowd above, which extended down the whol street! Hot weather, snow, drink, ker-razy fancy dress, drink, quality DJs, meeting a few famous heads, drink, roadtripping, street parties, forest parties, traditional Austria sausages, drink and just a tad more drink...what's not to love? Was on such a festival high, I've booked myself into Bestival and am scouring the internet to find the ideal European one (any suggestions?). Had to overhaul the internet to get all the music I missed over the 2 weeks I was away and in no particular order have found these very differing diamonds in the rough.

This guy is only 20!!! Ok maybe not as impressive as first seems, but trust me the tracks on offer have a productional wisdom to them that few young DJs can profess to owning. You can understand why he has had multiple releases on Southern Fried at the tender age of 20. His first solo outing ‘Jungle Warrior’ EP is out now and well worth the purchase. The Shystie remix is similar to Pon de Floor and no one is complaining because of it, but all tracks here will seemlessly fit into many fidgety sets. I love the Sugarhill Gang - Apache sample thrown into Jungle Warrior. HUGE TUNES...HUGE LOVE for this guy for creating EXACTLY the music I needed today.

Burns, the electro technician, is coming to Matter in London on Friday (hell yes I'm going to be there!). His Teknique EP is the third installment in his 4 EP series. The EP delivers the type of disjointed dance music that made groups like Justice and Vitalic blog heroes. The EP delivers three brand new tracks and two remixes. The first track "Teknique" will get your toes tapping (do people even still do that?). But for me it's the other 2 which really show off this guy's abilities. While it has some repetitive elements, the tracks have the type of evolution that made Fatboy Slim so popular in the 90s. All the tracks employ his funky stuttering style of start/stop electro house rhythms. Maybe not as good as the oh so stellar 'Heartbeats' which after being my ringtone for a LONG time was still not boring, but nevertheless great music.

High Rankin is a genius when it comes to heavy-hitting dubstep. He says his influences include carbonated water and phosphoric acid and describes his own music brand as “The monkey noise that you make when you get into a very hot bath. The noise when you gasp for breath when you are halfway through being sick”. Whatever he says, I suggest getting all of his stuff possible (it's all good! - love his Sin City track). It's not your everyday dub either, I'm getting pretty pissed with people releasing any old bassy tuneless shite and calling it amazing dubstep. This is classy music whilst maintaining the filth that we've come to love so much.

This guy is ONLY 17 years old! Hailing from Miami he goes by the name of Sonic C. Producing for a year now, he started out wanting to make exclusive remixes his djing gigs, then like most people he slowly became addicted to creating quality tunes. His production work is very versatile. Stickin' has been getting some amazing support from a number of international artists. Despite the fact he is still tweeking a few different parts of the track, the track is already a feature in the sets of Laidback Luke, Crookers and Major Lazer and Kissy Sell Out has even decided to Klub it up and add it to his podcast. Bestival was fucking amazing! The lineup was ridiculously good and HUGE, I saw everyone I wanted to see and they all their sets killed it (Bloody Beetroots, Foamo and Raffertie were sick), the sun shone the whole time, everyone there was friendly and even appreciated my drunken calls into the night and food there was quality. It couldn't have been better! But now for my post - this recommendation comes straight from A1 Bassline, who I got the pleasure of meeting at Bestival. Quality bloke and a total joker! He includes this in some of his sets and for the cheesy drop in the middle (wait for it and you'll understand) it's definitely worthy.

Michele Balduzzi (aka Phonat) is rapidly become one of the most talked about producers on the blogs this year. Originally from Florence, Italy, Phonat relocated to the UK on the request of MoFi records way back in 2007. He's currently making music which is in a league of it's own. 'Set Me Free', his latest release, is a brilliant track. First half is cool funky french house, but the second half of the track slips into something more glitchy electro, by all means it shouldn't work... but it does and pretty damn well at that!

Super Mal is simultaneously getting some big recognition. The British duo collabrated for the tune "Pixelated", obviously they should work together more often! His new release "Blood & Sun" has an obscure name, but I actually know the reasoning behind it...Apparently they found themselves in a local convenient store in London and (important part) were a bit baked. Waiting in line, they noticed an elegantly dressed old man demanding something the store owner did not have, and to everyone's surprise was so upset that he pompously slammed his fist on the counter in fury and shouted 'blood and sun!!!' Enjoy!

Hard to pigeonhole, but this duo have a definite old-school rave vibe. They're an eclectic blend of rave, breakbeat, 2-step, grime, ragga, electro, dubstep and booming ghetto tech. (And they often mention Happy Hardcore as an influence, but we'll pretend we didn't hear that). Pirate Soundsystem are not constricted by pretensions, they just want to produce music that makes you bounce, but still manage to perfect a progressive and experimental sound. But it is all about fun: about intense build ups; chirpy basslines; heavy beats; looped samples and monumental drops. After all, their myspace tag runs as: "Do You Like cliche samples?"

Lately, I’ve really been loving the peoples that are Sound of Stereo. The Bloody Beetroots have streamlined this harsh synthed, headbanging electronic house sound (that was a mouthful…) and have paved the way for people like Mustard Pimp. Sound of Stereo seem to take the same path and have some really killer tracks.

In an interview with Electric Zoo, they commented on their original song, Heads Up.

Because when the break kicks in, everybody is like “woooooooo” and then when we are building the track up again everybody goes like “ooooooohhhhh” and when the climax kicks in everybody goes like “yeaahhhhhhh”.

Very oddly put but at the same time, how perfect! The bloody beetroots remix is fucking amazing!I think it's better than the original, in fact it's one of my top tunes at the minute

Joe And Will Ask?

Joseph Ashworth and William Green make up the brilliant duo of Joe And Will Ask?. They have just released a 2 track EP on the respected Kitsuné label, and aren't stopping there. There previous work has gotten incredible acclaim, and it just keeps coming.

How old were you guys when you first started making music and what was the reason?

I (Joe) remember buying 'Music' for the Playstation 1. I must have been 11 or something like that. I just used it to try and copy my favourite dance songs, although it taught me the basics of sequencing. Once I finally got my PC, I got a copy of Cubase and just started messing around. There was never a point where I decided I wanted to be a producer. Will hadn't produced until we met.

How would you describe your music?

Well it varies quite a lot, but I would say energetic, bass-driven, melodic, dancey!

I'm sure you are asked this a lot, but how did you guys come up with the name Joe And Will Ask?

Haha we are as it happens! And the answer isn't very interesting - it was just a silly name we came up with before we decided we wanted to make anything serious - it was going to be like "Joe and Will ask"... "what is electro?" - kind of making fun of ourselves. It stuck and we quite like it now.

What do you to make your music and to perform live?

We produce with Cubase and tons of plug-ins (our favorites being z3ta, Absynth, and the Moog and Korg Legacy emulations). For performance, we both use Ableton Live on 2 computers, and sync up so that we are both adding different elements of the songs.

I am aware that you guys used to be associated with the Drum & Bass scene. How did you switch over to making electro music?

It was just me actually. Will was more of a hard-house fan. Haha. There was a period of about two years where I made more experimental music in different time structures and with recorded fucked up noises in between the drum and bass phase and this project. The transition was a weird one, but it's an entirely different way of putting noises together. Our music now definitely has elements of drum and bass and ambientness to it though.

From a DJ standpoint do you know intuitively what songs to play to certain crowds based on the first song you play or does it take you time to really know what the crowd wants to hear?

I'm sure many essays have been written by many DJ's on this. You can learn a lot from turning up a few hours early before your set and watching how the crowd reacts to the other DJs. Knowing what to play is a balance of a lot of factors.

Is there any track that you guys can play anywhere and know will always really get the crowd going?

We seem to have one for a few months, then another. It was the Popof remix of "John Starlight - Road Rage" for Autumn/Winter, "Funkagenda - What The Fuck" or "Kevin Saunderson - Bassline 2008" before that. Right now our next single "Mongozo" is getting the biggest reactions of everything we play.

What's going on in 2009 for Joe And Will Ask?

Our next single "Mongozo EP" is coming out at the end of March. That's going to be huge! Aside from that, we have spent the last few months in the studio remixing for Hockey, Kris Menace, Sharam Jey, Acid Girls, Franz And Shape, and loads more. All of these will be out soon. We have www.joeandwillask.com going live soon, with new t-shirts, and we are in the studio with Micachu working on a song which is awesome!

This/Is is a collaboration of Sydney Kids Alan and Nix. The First song i have for you is an original production by the boys and it has a really solid sound to it. It's well mastered, multiple synth lines and some cut up vocals that fit with the song so well it must have been based on them. It's really poppy and makes me feel warm and tingly inside. The Second Track is an official remix they have done for 'Just A Band'. It again has multiple synth lines to keep things interesting but this time a little heavier and a nice underlying baseline. Hailing from the birthplace of bassline - Sheffield - duo Squire of Gothos fuse womping speed garage with dubstep and house for bass-driven bangers. Wonky-bass don Kanji Kinetic has already snapped them up for his record label 'Electrostimulation' for recently released Rave Lord EP.

Their tunes are bizarre, grimey and strangely erratic; swinging from bubbly garage to pounding house beats in an instant. Their 'Introsphere' is currently a staple opener for many DJ sets. Starting off with an ominous, eerie lead-in, for the first two minutes elevating up and up, it finally drops into a satisfying thicket of warbling, pulsing basslines. Grimey vocals start off 'Triple Drop', before the track succumbs to some tasty wavering and wobbly dubstep. 'I Only Wanna Be With Bass' begins with a cheesy pop sample - cut, chopped, contorted and swiftly dropped into a tumultuos sea of bassy noise.

A1 Bassline, AKA Christian Shank, is all over the place at the minute. Got a nice snippet of an interview for you:

Bassline was born in Sheffield, do you see a big difference between the Northern and Southern UK scenes?

When you say that, you mean like from the club niche? Well, yeah, I guess people from the north say it's their sound. But I have been listening to garage since I was a kid and yeah I think there is a gap now between bassline and grime as north to south goes.

Where do you most enjoy playing?

I don' really have a favorite places, as long as the people there mental and the sound system is good im happy. I do like playing in L.A or over them ends because its always so hot and I hate being cold. Also any clubs you can smoke in is a YES!

The likes of yourself, Dexplicit and Pirate Soundsystem are really pushing the envelope in terms of blurring the boundaries between bassline and electro. Are there any other UK artists honing this new brand of garage that we should know about?

Yeah people like heavy feet, some Andy George beats, Baobinga I guess have this electro, garage feel. I guess now when writing i just tend to write house music with the influence of garage/bassline music.

Laptops vs old school decks. Do you think it matters that people are using laptops to play DJ sets? Are they cheating or just pushing the medium forward?

Hmm... it's hard to say, only ever used to play off records and was anti CD, but now CD decks are much better and its rare ill play off 12"s. Its a touchy subject. Although vinyl sounds better than cds!

Do you have preferred software for your live sets?

If I were to play live its hard seeing everything I do is pre done in the studio, but Abelton live is really good.

Your music isn't just bassline house, it crosses over into a handful of other electronic genres. What do you make of this new 'Fidget House' genre. Is it really a genre? And is it possibly getting a little stale now, or are there enough people pushing it forward?

Ha im not to sure if it really counts as a genre, i thik the real fidget stuff is like early switch and jesse rose stuff but i think the term got out of hand, just like new rave ha. But yeah the stuff I write doesn't always have to fit into "fidget" or "bassline" genre. I still think people are playing it, but i can sense that something fresh is going to happen real soon!

Do you think mp3 blogs are a positive or negative phenomenon for the music industry? Are they stealing money from the artists and labels? Or are they indispensable in terms of promo?

I think they are great for new artists, and amazing for getting exposure, I remember when I first blogged Girl Thing, Palms Out gave me a feature which helped me alot. For bigger artists im not to sure, on one hand it makes tunes more dispensable, and everyone has them so it makes it less special to hear a song when everyone has it. But on the same hand its great that people have access to these songs. I like it the way blogs say buy this tune and give links, I just hate it when people dont and play a shit mp3 out, it makes it sound horrid and is bad all round!

Who are your favorite artists right now? Any tips for 2009?

I love nearly everything Jack Beats do and really feeling His Majesty Andre. Tips, err.. Sampled loops, cuts and filters ha. And Big basslines ha.

You also produce under another name Partyshank with Howard – it's punky electro, fusing 8-bit sounds and dirty riffs, another favourite of this blog. Which project will most of your focus be on this year?

I'm not really to sure, they are really different sounds so its nice to have a break and switch from either projects. Recently i have been writing loads for both projects. Got 4 new partyshank tracks which are dirty electro tracks with a few vocal hooks.

British hard as nails electro/house/hip hop duo Jack Beats have been making a name for themselves pumping juice into tracks by the likes of Lady Sovereign and Steed Lord. They are just one of the sick artists on Hervé's Cheap Thrills label, perhaps the number one fidget label of last year, and have an astounding number of tracks and remixes in the pipeline.

Individually you have hugely impressive credentials – why did you decide to combine forces, and what do you each bring to the table?

It wasn’t really a conscious decision to do stuff together, we’ve both been really good friends from a long time ago, before the whole DJ championship stuff, and we just started messing about with making tunes together because we knew we’d have fun doing it. I guess we started making music both around the same time, and musically we were on the same page so when we got together it was pretty natural. We both knew how to make tunes and so it was just fun and creative. The first thing we did together was a remix for Deekline and Wizard, which was in 2005, that came out as a Beni G & Plus One remix, which was, I guess, the beginnings of what we are up to now. What do we bring to the table? Well one of us brings the milk, and the other brings the tea – we drink far too much of that in the studio, and possibly too much beer out of the studio.

There are some hugely impressive acts on Herve’s Cheap Thrills label, on which your debut EP will be released; how does it feel being on such a great roster, and what can we expect from the release?

It’s amazing really – we are so pleased to have a label like Cheap Thrills to be part of; we respect everyone on the label so much and couldn’t think of a better place for our music to be getting released. The first thing to come out is gonna be on the download label (Cheaper Thrills), which is a track with us and Dynamite MC, and is kinda our style meets Bmore, with a Boy 8-Bit remix. Then in the first part of 2009 we’ll drop our EP on Cheap Thrills, which is gonna be a real example of what sound we rep, and as it’s our first original material we’re gonna make sure it’s the best we’ve done yet! So far we’ve only written one track for it, called K Hole, which is pretty hard to describe really – we did it super quickly and both were like, ‘Damn, is anyone gonna get what we’re doing here?’ and when Herve heard it and loved it, I guess we knew we’d done something hot. We’re just really excited about getting the EP wrapped up and released now.

You’re gone on record saying Jack Beats is a sideline gig for you both – if the demand continues to rise as it has, do you ever see it overtaking your current priorities?

Well, we do both have other commitments outside of what we do with Jack Beats, but it’s definitely taking off more so this year. The good thing with us is that we have such a high work ethic that we’ll always be able to continue doing everything we currently do, as well as pushing what we do with Jack Beats as far as we want to.

A few months back Dan Sena did an unofficial remix of "Haus Of Cards" that is an absolute tune. Since then I've looked forward to hearing more from him, but haven't until today. His new track is called "Italofuker (BB Drop 3:16)". The BB Drop part is dedicated to the masked men themselves, The Bloody Beetroots. The track is fun and bouncy with some nice little guitar riffs that go well with the raw electro sound.

When i first found out about this guy, i hoped it was that Latino mullet wearing jockstrap of a human from Saved By The Bell who had somehow become actually relatively cool but turns out its actually a regular bloke hailing from Philadelphia but now residing in New York City. He was one of the biggest American hardcore and freeform DJs and in 2001 started the Pitched Up record label as an outlet for American hardcore music. In 2007 AC Slater moved away from hardcore and raves to focus on a more club oriented sound, getting commissioned to do remixes for artists such as Freestylers, Moby, Shwayze, Human Resource, and Drop the Lime. When asked as to why he started DJ'in he says "When I was really young, I went on vacation, and I had saved up all this money for the vacation with my family. And I met this kid, a friend of my cousin's, who was a DJ, and I was completely mesmerized so I took all the money I had and went to the pawn shop and bought a DJ mixer. When I came home, I started making hip hop mixes for all the kids in my neighborhood and it just kind of took off from there". Its not surprising then that alongside "old school rave stuff", early 90's hip hop has influenced his music a lot. In fact, AC considers De La Soul's album De La Soul is Dead his most influential album "because it's so humorous and fun, and well put together and so lighthearted, but at the same time it's really good, just bad ass".

Shinichi Osawa, also known as Mondo Grosso, is an artist currently signed onto Avex Trax's "Rhythm Zone" label. Previously he has released albums under the title of 'Mondo Grosso', which is is Italian for "big world". Over the course of his career he has worked in genres from Acid Jazz to House, with strong influences of underground club music, though his recent work has been in the genre of electro house. HMV Japan rated Mondo Grosso at #95 on their "Top 100 Japanese Pop Artists". His album "The One" is out on the 26th Jan, buy it! Its definitely gonnna be quality. I'm a geek and pre-ordered that badboy ages ago.
